When I was studying math, a grad student once said to me, “Any math class is like a road trip. The syllabus lists the key destinations, and it’s easy to get wrapped up in going as fast as possible along the shortest possible route, so that you can finish your trip as quickly as you can.”
“But at any point along the way, you can just park the car and walk into the woods! It’s not the most direct route, but you’ll find all sorts of amazing stuff that you would have otherwise missed,” he continued.
